Eric, this series comes at a time I am reading Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior (Mlodinow, Leonard, 2012). I recommend it to you if you have not read it already. It starts with mentioning the inner light, and the cross-cultural reference to it as well. However, being written by a physicist, it goes quickly into describing how modern science has come to actually view "it" in the brain. Mlodinow, also wrote The Drunkards Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives (Mlodinow, Leonard, 2009), another entertaining book.
